It’s officially been two weeks since I joined the ranks of the unemployed, and while I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about what comes next, I’ve decided to make the most of this unexpected break. Of course, I’m applying for jobs, filing for unemployment, and stress-eating snacks at 2 AM, but I’m also determined to use this time for personal growth, creativity, and self-discovery.

So, instead of spiraling (for now), here’s how I’m making this jobless season work for me:

Step One: Get Another Expensive Degree

What better way to embrace a life transition than by throwing more money at education? For years, I worked as an accountant—despite having zero passion for debits and credits. I even pictured myself retiring with the IRS. But now that I have this unexpected career pause, I’ve realized that I can’t see myself doing this forever.

Cue the pivot: data analytics.

I’ve always been curious about SQL, Python and the world of data. So, I’ve taken the leap and enrolled in an online master’s program in Data Analytics. Hopefully, this degree helps me successfully switch careers and enter a field I’m actually excited about. Here’s to learning new skills, embracing change, and praying tuition is worth it.

Step Two: Be Creative & Have Fun

Since I suddenly have free time, I figured it was finally time to start my blog. I’ve always loved writing and dream of publishing a book one day, but I have no clue how I’ll get there. However, starting somewhere feels like a step in the right direction.

Another creative hobby I’m revisiting is sewing.A while back, my grandma inspired me to learn how to sew my own clothes, so I bought a sewing machine and attempted my first project which was a tote bag. Was it perfectly proportional? No. But was it a functioning cow-print masterpiece? Yes. My next project is a pair of pajama shorts. I’ve already bought the fabric, found a pattern, and cut everything out… but never actually sewed it together. Time to change that and pray these shorts look like actual clothing when I’m done.

Step Three: Get Tight & Stay Well

Funemployment also means prioritizing my health, especially since I’m getting married this year and very much would like to be snatched before the big day. My plan includes 30 minutes of movement every day, 8K-10K steps daily, strength training 3 times a week and eating a boring but effective protein packed diet.

Beyond physical health, I’m also checking in on my mental health. Right now, being unemployed hasn’t fully hit me, but when it does, I want to avoid staring into the void for too long. Luckily, I have a solid support system which includes my family, friends, and even former coworkers who were laid off with me. And let’s not forget my good old prescription for Zoloft because sometimes, you need a little extra help.

While my brain is buzzing with a million other ideas for how to make the most of this time, these are the key goals I’m focusing on so I don’t end up doing absolutely nothing. Was being unemployed part of my 2025 bingo card? Nope. Do I need money to fund a wedding? Absolutely. But am I determined to turn this unexpected chapter into something meaningful?

HELL YES. LET’S FUCKING GOOOOO!
